Stay Safe Against the Sumer Heat Wave

How to Prepare for Extreme Heat

This summer, the heat is giving our crazy winter a run for its money, and it looks like it’s just the beginning. Heat affects people in different ways, more so if you’re young, elderly, sick or overweight. With the heat of the sun drying exposed surfaces anywhere between 50-90 degrees hotter than the air, everyone should take precautions.

To ensure that the heat does not get the best of you:

  • Wear light, loose fitting clothing and stay indoors in air-conditioned rooms.
  • Apply plenty of sunscreen and apply it often.
  • Be aware of heat exhaustion which could include clammy skin, nausea, fainting, weakness, heavy sweating etc.
  • Reduce body temperature with cool, wet cloths.

To prepare your home from heat and avoid it’s damaging effects:

  •  Install or maintain air conditioning units (insulation may be necessary)
  • Install temporary window reflectors, to reflect the heat back outside.
  • Cover windows that receive morning/afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings, etc.
  • Keep your storm windows installed all year.
  • Weather strip windows and doors to keep cool air in.
  • Check air conditioning ducts for proper insulation.

Stay well informed of the heat index and avoid being outside for long durations of time. Extreme hear is no joke and could cause serious damage. SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows reminds you to stay safe from the summer heat!

Preventing Summer Flooding and Water Damage

7/11/2018 (Permalink)

In the past week, if not couple of weeks, the suffocating heat has hit the east coast with a vengeance. Rest assured, the sweat and discomfort is about to go away even if it’s just for a while. With severe heat, always comes a tumultuous storm to break the weather. SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows is here to remind you that even though the storms might seem like a relief, everyone should always stay prepared.

While awaiting the much calmer weather, there are some things that you should do to make sure that the storm does not add unnecessary stress. One potential major issue: flooding and water damage. Fortunately, there are some easy preventative steps you can take to make sure water damage is not a major concern.

  • Update and maintain your drainage in the yard. This can be as simple as adding extra landscaping or purchasing plastic drainage to lead the water away from the home. The further the water is, the less likely it is going to be a problem.
  • Check your sump pump. The sump pump is a life-savor, constantly working to drain water as the levels exceed the foundation and expel the water away from the house. Make sure your sump pump is in good condition and check on it during a rain storm to ensure it has not stopped working.

Nevertheless, these are just prevention methods and sometimes things go beyond our control. In those moments where everything seems to be going wrong, just remember to BREATHE and call SERVPRO of East Brunswick/Princeton Meadows (732) 432-9800 so we can take the worry out of your hands.

What You Need to Know About Water Damage

Water damage can be devastating and overwhelming whatever the cause.   When it comes to water damage in your home or business, understanding the type of water you’re dealing with is crucial in assessing the procedures required for proper clean up.  Taking the necessary precautions and steps is crucial in avoiding further damage until the professionals arrive.  Knowing what you are dealing with will help you avoid future health and structural issues.

Clean Water –Category 1

Clean water, also known as Category 1, come from such sources as water supply lines including tub, sink or toilet tank overflows, hot water heater and refrigerator ice or water supply line.  This is usually the easiest type of water to deal with.  Properly cleaning and drying the affected areas are your biggest concerns to avoid mold

Gray Water – Category 2

Clean water, left over time, can become gray water.  Gray water is water that is to some extent contaminated either because it was left untreated or due to the nature of the source.  An overflowing toilet or dishwasher would be considered gray water.  Water that has travelled through walls and ceilings, even though from a clean source, would be gray water in this case.

Black Water – Category 3

Black water is the most contaminated type of water of the three.   It can be filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals, pesticides and more.  Black water is caused by sewage damage, flooding or natural disasters. Examples are sewage backup, ground water intrusion or sump pump backup.  Black water requires special equipment and proper handling and safety precautions when restoring your home or business from this type of water damage.

Whatever the cause or type of water damage you experience, the most important thing is to minimize the damage and call our IICRC certified professionals for help.  Don’t leave your home or business to chance, call SERVPRO of East Brunswick/Princeton Meadows at 732-432-9800 and let our professionals help.

Preventing Frozen Pipes

2/14/2017 (Permalink)

Here's what you need to know to be prepared and prevent water damage to your home:

  • Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate around pipes.

  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through unheated or uninsulated areas of your home.

  • Shut off outdoor faucets. Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to “off .”

  • If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.

  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.

  • Proper maintainance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of puffbacks.

  • Tag the location of your main water valve and make sure you can easily turn it on and off.

  • If you have a thermostat that uses a battery, be sure to replace it regularly.

  • Wrap pipes nearest exterior walls and in crawl spaces with pipe insulation or heating tape.

Following these precautionary steps to protect your plumbing will help you avoid water damage cleanup to your home after a burst pipe.

Have You Checked Your Washer and Dryer Lately?

Water Damage Have You Checked Your Washer and Dryer Lately? Periodic washer and dryer maintenance could avoid major flooding issues in your home.

Don't Ignore Your Washer and Dryer

Did you know that your washer and dryer is a likely source for flood or fire in your home?  Without periodic maintenance, you could be dealing with a major flood or fire problem.  Preventing a flood due to a washer’s hose corroding and splitting open is as easy as inspecting periodically and replacing when necessary.  Check and clean filters to avoid buildup and water flow problems.

As illustrated in this picture, SERVPRO of East Brunswick recently cleaned up water damage in Princeton, New Jersey caused by a corroded washer hose that cracked open.   The damage to the property was extensive affecting hardwood floors as well as carpet, contents and drywall. With more attention to maintenance, you can avoid this from happening to you.

Statistics Highlight the Need for Preparation and Caution in Holiday Decorating and Entertaining

11/22/2013 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Statistics Highlight the Need for Preparation and Caution in Holiday Decorating and Entertaining December is the peak month for holiday candle fires.

Local SERVPRO® restoration specialist offers tips for preventing holiday fires

South River, NJ (Grassroots Newswire) November 18, 2013 -- Lights, candles, action – it’s the holiday season again. Brightly lighted decorations, elaborate meals and large gatherings are all part of traditional holiday celebrations. Unfortunately, these seasonal traditions also cause an average of 230 home fires each year, with an average of 4 deaths, 21 injuries and $17.3 million in property damage.

“Christmas tree lights and candles are just two of the holiday traditions that increase the likelihood of a fire starting in your home,” says Salvatore Marinello of SERVPRO® of East Brunswick/PrincetonMeadows. “There are about three times as many cooking-related fires on Thanksgiving Day and almost twice as many on Christmas Day as there are on non-holidays. It only takes a single distracted or careless action to turn a family get-together into a tragedy.”

Marinello says that homeowners can help keep their homes and their families safe during the holiday season by understanding the dangers and taking some simple, commonsense precautions.

Holiday Cooking Fire Facts

Thanksgiving Day has three times the average number of reported home structure fires involving cooking equipment.

The two other peak days for cooking-related fires are Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.

Holiday Cooking Safety Tips

Supervise items on the stovetop. Fifty-eight percent of kitchen fires involve ranges; homes with electric cooktops have a higher risk of fire than homes with gas cooktops.

Keep flammable items – potholders, packaging, wrapping, wooden utensils, loose clothing – away from the stovetop.

Don’t let lack of sleep or alcohol consumption affect your ability to concentrate on preparing the meal.

Holiday Decorating Fire Facts

Half of all holiday decoration fires start because the decoration is too close to a heat source.

On average, 32 candle fires are reported each day. December is the peak month for candle fires.

Holiday Decorating Safety Tips:

Keep all decorations away from heat sources like radiators, portable heaters, and fireplaces.

Use flameless candles.

If you do use traditional candles, burn them in sturdy candleholders, well away from drapes and other flammable materials. Never leave them unattended and never allow them to burn down to less than one inch in length.

Christmas Tree Fire Facts:

50% of live tree fires occur between December 22 and January 5.

31% of tree fires are caused by electrical problems.

14% involve decorative lights.

Christmas Tree Safety Tips:

Keep live trees well watered to reduce the chance of a fire.

Check wiring on lights for breaks and wear, replace worn strings and don’t exceed manufacturer guidelines for connecting multiple strands of lights.

Don’t leave tree lights plugged in when you are away from home or asleep.

“We hope these tips will be a reminder to South River area families to make fire prevention a priority in their holiday preparations,” said Marinello, “so they can spend the season enjoying family and friends, not dealing with the aftermath of a fire.”
