How SERVPRO Technicians Perform Expert Water Damage Cleanup

Water intrusion can take a heavy toll on your property and emotional well-being. Usually caused by bursting pipes, the impact caused by excessive quantities of liquid entering an indoor environment can be catastrophic. One of the most valuable responses to a home emergency is to enlist the help of professional services.

No two water damage restoration jobs in East Brunswick are the same. Residential properties vary significantly in their structural layout, the construction materials, and the electrical system in place. The huge differences between properties make extensive training and experience necessary when approaching a restoration project. It is essential to assess a structure for hazards before performing any water damage mitigation. Older properties may have dangerous building materials such as asbestos which should not be disturbed without a professional abatement team. If the property is exposed to moisture for a long time, there is a strong chance of mold growth or other microorganisms like bacteria and viruses.

Making sure that a property is safe before performing mitigation is crucial. Hazards to look out for could include sagging ceilings, indicating a potential structural collapse. Light fixtures can also build up water which presents an electrical risk. Other applicable precautions include wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and using ground fault circuit interrupters on all equipment and electronics. Wet properties are inherently precarious while bringing in industrial restoration equipment, portable lighting, or generators can complicate matters further. We take extra time to ensure that wiring for equipment is taped down to avoid trip hazards and that wires are grouped to avoid electrical hazards.

Avoiding Electrical Hazards

  • Water conducts electricity which means extra care must be taken when entering a wet property.
  • Inspecting light fixtures and power distribution panels for wetness is critical to safety scoping a building.
  • Before entering affected areas, all circuits relating to water damaged rooms should be shut off at the power distribution panel.

Another potential hazard in wet properties is infectious waste. Contamination can be brought into a property via an unclean water supply. Pre-existing microbes or damages like rust can be amplified by moisture resulting in contamination even from clean supply lines. When working in a wet area, it is essential to avoid potential puncture wounds that could be caused by exposed nails found in carpet tacks, broken glass, or other sharp objects. The safety procedures to follow in an affected area is to avoid eating or drinking and remove yourself from the site if you suffer from cuts, scratches, or other open wounds. Containment to clean equipment and regular area disinfecting before performing extraction or other restoration activities is critical to ensuring a safe workspace. Proper PPE like thick rubber boots, goggles, and chemical-resistant gloves are essential.

Working Safely in a Wet Environment

  • Cleaning equipment after usage and between rooms can help to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
  • Clothing worn during restoration should be cleaned separately from regular clothing using powerful cleaning products.
  • Debris should be placed in thick, waterproof trash bags that can be transported out of the property safely.

Safety is crucial to efficient restoration. Contact SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows for water damage restoration at (732) 641-4023.

Carpet Removal in Your East Brunswick Home

Drying Subflooring After Carpet Removal in East Brunswick Homes

Despite the thickness of the material, nearly all carpet types used in traditional flooring for East Brunswick homes are highly absorbent. When water loss incidents threaten the residence, these materials can begin to show the worst signs of wear and deterioration after even limited exposure. In many cases, our professionals must remove the carpet and the padding to prevent even costlier damages to the subflooring materials like OSB board, plywood, and even the supporting joists underneath this top layer.

Removing the carpeting from the floors is one way to begin slowing the migration of water damage in East Brunswick homes, though more steps are necessary to remove this threat entirely. Our SERVPRO professionals must take immediate action with our premier water removal and drying tools and technologies to dry supporting materials like the subflooring, joists, and beams. We can begin by using our surface moisture meters to determine the concentration and severity of moisture damage to the subflooring layer before drying efforts start.

Numerous tools can play a role in the drying process. However, drying mats can often be one of the most effective strategies for pulling moisture from the surface layer of subflooring before warping or deterioration begins. Placement directly on the subflooring plywood can draw out moisture at a controlled pace. Our SERVPRO professionals can continually monitor the progress of this water removal until we reach the established dry baseline.

Once we have established that the area is dry and ready for carpeting, our in-house team of general contractors can reinstall the complete flooring assembly. We can meet the customer’s expectations and wishes in this stage by installing a different look and style of carpet flooring than what was initially removed during the mitigation stages.

Water losses in your home can be a destructive force, especially in areas where water collects on the floor. Though carpeting sometimes must get removed, we can often preserve the subflooring materials with the proper response with our premier drying equipment. Give our SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows team a call anytime at (732) 307-9665.

Are There Instantaneous Processes for Water Removal From Plainsboro Homes?

SERVPRO Breaks Plainsboro Home Water Cleanup Exercises but Deliver Faster Results

Although water leaks happen at a go, removal cannot be accomplished at once because of various hindrances like water soaking into materials or items standing in the way for extraction equipment to be used effectively. Breaking down the process into stages simplifies each step, thus restoring your Plainsboro home faster.

Water removal from Plainsboro homes takes different actions which address the changes to the spilled water and affected materials. SERVPRO starts by inspecting your property to establish how extensive the moisture migration is, determining the best removal approach.

The Main Water Removal Procedures Include:

In the first stage of the restoration, water evacuation is the most crucial step. The method chosen depends on the amount of water remnants in the house. If there is significant pooling, extraction with pumps is necessary. Our SERVPRO technicians can use high-speed, submersible, or other pump types to match the situation.

When there are no pools on surfaces, the water absorbed by porous materials like carpets and upholstery is the main concern. For such cases, vacuum extractors do a stellar job. The main advantage of these extractors is their vacuum lift, although they have additional features that distinguish each type.

Extractors Can Be Categorized Into:

  • Weighted deep extractors
  • Portable extractors
  • Truck-mounted extractors
  • Post extraction actions

Water extraction is only the first stage of the removal. Additional action is necessary to dry wet materials and restore humidity levels. Many people trivialize this step leading to dissatisfactory outcomes, especially when the moisture is trapped in the air as humidity condenses, wetting new areas, or a bad odor develops.

Evaporation and dehumidification are the main processes that help manage the post-extraction phase of water removal. Our SERVPRO technicians calculate the necessary number of air movers and dehumidifiers to manage and expedite drying.

What Problems Does Water Damage Trigger in East Brunswick Homes?

Water Leak being Vacuumed There is no job too big or small for your local SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows.

SERVPRO Intervenes Against Physical and Chemical Changes in East Brunswick Homes

Water leaks are a bother, especially when many items in your house like furniture, appliances, or carpets get wet. The most inconvenient leaks start from overhead positions or when an appliance malfunction sprays jets of water over vast areas. However, the bother of wet materials is insignificant compared to the deterioration moisture can trigger in your East Brunswick home, especially if left unaddressed over an extended period.

The water damage your East Brunswick home sustains can be immediate or long-term depending on the materials present, the amount of water spilled, and the kind of countermeasures you take. When SERVPRO intervenes, we can limit the overall damage levels by using specialized equipment or unique procedures to reverse or halt damages, some of which take time to develop fully.

The Main Damages Resulting From Water Intrusion

  • Rotting of wood
  • Mold growth
  • Bacteria proliferation
  • Rusting of steel

The most crucial weapon against the destructiveness of moisture is quick action. Many water-related problems take time to develop and continue to worsen over time as long as the material is wet. For example, mold takes at least 24 to 48 hours to develop after the initial exposure. When our SERVPRO technicians use powerful extractors to remove all standing water within a few hours and set up dehumidifiers in a property, we can prevent mold rather than tackle the hard remediation task later.

Contamination is common after water leaks. Any water intrusion, whether clean or otherwise, can lead to contamination since moisture presence triggers the proliferation of microbes like fungi and bacteria. Such development is significant when water stagnates, or wet materials are not dried properly. Contamination exhibits several signs, including a change in the condition of surfaces and odors. Also, it might affect indoor air quality. Our SERVPRO technicians combat contamination using biocides and moisture control. For example, after cleaning carpets, we apply the biocide on the floor surface and the underside of a carpet. We then set air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the area.

SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows is always prepared to respond to water damage incidents restoring your home to its preloss state. Call us at (732) 432-9800. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Water Cleanup You Can Trust in Plainsboro

SERVPRO Follows Water Cleanup Protocols to Achieve Results in Plainsboro

Water damage is typical in households across the United States, but many homeowners mistake taking the DIY route for cleanup. Failing to remove all moisture can exacerbate the problem, opening the door to secondary damage that results in material degradation. Not only that, but moisture within your Plainsboro home could turn into black mold development. SERVPRO wants you to know that we can tackle all of the water removal services and drying you need.

Protocols are crucial for any water cleanup in Plainsboro – regardless of the building type. Our action plan will involve the following:

  • Identifying the water damage/moisture source –Once water intrusion occurs, our initial steps include identifying the category source. Category 1 brings the best potential for salvaging furnishings and building materials. Categories 2 and 3 call for additional disinfectants and personal protective equipment (PPE), and it becomes more difficult to recover any damaged materials.
  • Mitigation and prevention –We work to halt further intrusion by addressing the leak/moisture infiltration source.
  • Drying and dehumidification –This is imperative to restore relative humidity (RH) and bring your interior back to pre-water event conditions.

We Ensure All Materials are Dry

We equip ourselves with moisture evaluation and monitoring equipment to ensure no moisture gets left behind. Whenever materials are still wet/damp, we adjust our air movers and dehumidifiers accordingly to achieve our goals. The sooner we can get in and hit all marks for water cleanup, repair and drying, the more we can decrease the chance of mold growth and musty odors.

Do you need a team you can trust to handle your water cleanup needs? SERVPRO of East Brunswick/Princeton Meadows features IICRC-certified water restoration technicians (WRT) ready to get to work at a moment’s notice. You can request help online or give us a call at (732) 432-9800.

SERVPRO Uses Regular and Advanced Techniques to Save Floors Affected by Excess Moisture Exposure

The polished hardwood floor at your Plainsboro home may be the envy of your friends. However, if it is exposed to significant amounts of water, you might encounter myriad problems. Apart from ruining the visual appeal of your floor, you might also foot a hefty bill, especially if you have to replace floorboards.

Although you might not manage to stop water intrusion, understanding the issues that might arise can help you manage the water damage at your Plainsboro home. Since you cannot learn everything you need to know within the short time between the intrusion and the onset of damages, involving a professional team like SERVPRO from the beginning presents the best chance of controlling the loss by minimizing or preventing some of the damages.

Typical Water-Related Problems That Might Affect Your Wooden Floor Include

  • Crowning
  • Cupping
  • Buckling
  • Warping

Buckling and warping occur because moisture causes swelling in wood. Naturally, dry wood has a moisture percentage of approximately 10% but can absorb higher amounts. As the floorboards swell, they push against each other, buckling at the joints since there is no space for expansion. SERVPRO professionals tackle buckling by expediting water extraction and drying. We can also remove some floorboards to allow free expansion. That way, the floorboards can regain their original shape when we dry them.

Cupping and crowning manifest in raised edges and arching that presents the mid-section of individual floorboards, respectively. They are caused by variable water absorption. If the floorboards absorb water from the bottom and sides, it leads to cupping. Crowning, on the other hand, develops when the top is exposed to more moisture than the bottom.

Various solutions can help prevent cupping and crowning, including:

  • Using drying mats to extract water trapped between floorboards
  • Using drying chambers to improve floor drying processes
  • Sanding out cupped edges after drying the floor

SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows can help you find unique solutions to manage water damage on your wooden floors, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (732) 432-9800.

Does Water Absorption into Wood Flooring in Plainsboro Homes Make the Material Unsalvageable?

Damp Materials can Be Hard to Restore and Clean, But Our SERVPRO Team Helps Plainsboro Properties.

Water damage can threaten your home and its building materials, especially when pooling and surface water concerns are not resolved quickly. Our fast-responding technicians help to meet the urgent needs of your home during water damage emergencies to protect exposed flooring.

Water Absorption Begins Shortly After Exposure

Water damage restoration in Plainsboro must begin quickly after emergencies, as moisture can begin immediately absorbing into wood plank flooring. Because many properties use engineered wood, this process can happen at a faster rate than traditional hardwood. Some of the less-porous flooring materials include:

  • Teak
  • Cedar
  • White Oak
  • Redwood

When Free Water Becomes Bound Water

There are stages of water damage to wood flooring, and in the earlier phases, restoration is still possible and feasible. Removing surface water might be one of the stages to preventing worse absorption concerns. Still, effective drying options like mats can pull trapped moisture to the surface for removal before altering the composition of the planks. Bound water indicates a chemical process where the cells of the wood flooring and water molecules join and permanently damage the material.

Is Your Water-Damaged Floor Salvageable?

As a homeowner, your main concern is typically how much restoration is ultimately going to cost. When it becomes a situation where demolition and reconstruction are necessary, this might end up costing more. Choosing what approach is best usually involves whether physical distortion and warping have started with the plank flooring.

The impact of water on wood flooring can be absolute, requiring removal and replacement in some situations. The determination of your property needs results from data collected through moisture detection devices and known moisture range goals. Our SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows team can quickly help your property recover from water damage when you call (732) 641-6954.

Signs That Damp Carpet in Your East Brunswick Home Cannot Be Restored.

8/6/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment at work. Water damage to your flooring is no DIY project. SERVPRO has you covered from start to finish for all water damage restoration services.

There Are Several Signals That Carpet is Not Salvageable After Water Damages.

As one of the most commonly installed flooring materials, carpeting can become quickly damaged by water. Emergencies require SERVPRO professionals to mitigate this situation to prevent tear-out.

What Damages Can Carpets Sustain?

Despite how water damage in East Brunswick can affect the entire house, flooring materials are often experiencing the heaviest tolls. Specific signals can indicate significant damage to carpets:

  • Delamination – This is where layers of the carpet material begin to separate. In the earliest stages, drying can overcome this process, but as it worsens, the carpet is no longer able to be preserved/restored.
  • Deterioration – Prolonged exposure to saturation can weaken fibers and the backing material to separate and deteriorate.
  • Subflooring/Padding Damage – When integrity damage or oversaturation exists with elements like the padding or the subflooring material, the carpet is often too heavily damaged for restoration.

Is It Ever Possible to Dry Carpeted Floors?

Drying carpeting is not often as complicated as it might seem. This process's largest and most challenging aspect lies in extracting any trapped water caught in the fibers and padding.

Because carpeting can be a commonly installed element for homes and businesses in the area, having credible options for drying and restoring these materials is helpful. As experienced water restoration professionals, our SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows team is ready 24/7 at (732) 641-4023.

Water Damage Can be Widespread in a Plainsboro Kitchen Without the Immediate Intervention of SERVPRO Professionals.

The kitchen is one of the most high-traffic areas of your home and one that a water damage event can highly damage. When your dishwasher breaks or the sink springs a leak, water can spread quickly throughout the house.

Long Exposure Threats for Cabinetry

Water cleanup for Plainsboro homes often means more than just mopping up surface water. With many cabinets built from particleboard and a laminate finish, water can quickly become a destructive force. We work to eliminate trapped moisture to reduce cabinet tear-out when possible.

Removing Surface and Trapped Water in Kitchens

After moisture meters and detection devices determine where the bulk of damage exists, our technicians' focus is to remove and dry this moisture. Surface water is often much easier to address and monitor, though structural cavities can also hide water damage. We have several tools in our inventory to help, including:

There are several ways that water-fed appliances in the kitchen could develop leaks or malfunctions that damage the property. As a common callout for our experienced SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows professionals, we arrive with extraction and drying tools to help. SERVPRO in East Brunswick Handles Damp and Water Damaged Crawlspaces

Clean crawl space SERVPRO's technicians have state of the art equipment to thoroughly dry out your crawl space. Call us today for assistance at (732) 432-9800.

Confined Spaces Present Unique Obstacles for Extraction and Drying

When the crawl space becomes affected by burst pipes or flooding, direct action is necessary to resolve the situation. Allowing standing water to go unchallenged and unresolved beneath the main floor of the house can welcome secondary effects like mold growth and structural weakening from prolonged moisture exposures.

Water Removal Services for Confined Space

With water damage in East Brunswick happening in many ways, there is no one set path for damage to your crawlspace. Natural flooding can occur with little warning and have devastating effects on the structure, but much of the plumbing network hub exists in the crawlspace for accessibility. Removing any standing water or pooling requires careful consideration to reach the distance and fit into the space. Truck mount extractors can offer a long intake distance, allowing SERVPRO professionals to bring hoses where they are necessary under the house for extraction.

Necessary Drying Options for Crawl Spaces

Drying is also a complicated issue in terms of space and accessibility. Low-profile air movers and similar units can circulate warm air to promote evaporation. Sealing off the area can help to better regulate optimal drying conditions with:

  • Centrifugal Air Movers
  • Axial Air Movers
  • Portable Heaters
  • Desiccant Dehumidifiers

Wet crawl spaces are more common to area homes than you think, and they can be a hazard when not resolved. Our SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows team can help when you call (732) 432-9800.

SERVPRO Can Often Restore Carpets to a Good Quality Following Water Damage in Monmouth Junction

Water impacts the structure of a carpet in two ways. The primary causes for concern are delamination and latex deterioration. Delamination is when the backing for the rug begins to separate. Latex deterioration occurs as a result of age and exposure to natural gases or moisture. Latex connects carpet fibers to the carpet backing.

When performing water damage restoration in Monmouth Junction, it is essential to recognize that carpets are often a core area of potential damage. A wet carpet can be up to 50% weaker when it is wet. Over-extraction or detaching of a carpet can cause delamination to occur. This usually results in requiring a complete replacement of the carpet.

  • Nylon cut carpets are among the most saveable and respond well to general water extraction, carpet floating, and reinstallation.
  • Multi-layered carpets such as Olefin Berber carpets are among the most challenging to restore as the extraction process is slow.
  • Carpet pads almost always need to be replaced following a water intrusion incident.

We can often return carpets to a good condition. Contact SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows for water damage restoration at (732) 432-9800.

In Plainsboro Homes, Can Floorboards Be Repaired after Water Damage?

3/22/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment drying floor Water cleanup in your home should be left to the professionals. SERVPRO uses the latest technology and equipment necessary for your home remediation.

SERVPRO Can Effectively Restore a Range of Water-related Damages in your Plainsboro Home.

Wooden materials have a natural moisture content. In North America, most structural woods are lumber which has a moisture content of around 10%. When water intrudes in your home, this moisture content may rise, which can cause cupping, crowning, warping, or buckling.

Restoring floorboards is a part of water cleanup in your Plainsboro home. The goal is to use specific drying equipment, such as desiccant dehumidifiers, to return floorboards to their natural moisture content. Often this is the first step in returning them to a preloss condition. Once moisture content is under control, technicians can begin the process of restoring them.

  • Cupping is when the floorboard arches upwards at the edges, forming cups. Once appropriately dried, cupping can be sanded out in most cases, preventing demolition.
  • Crowning is when the floorboard arc from the center is frequently a result of overdrying or dehydrating the wood. Crowning damage is usually permanent.
  • Buckling and warping can often be permanent damages. Although SERVPRO can dry and refinish these where possible to avoid expensive replacements.

Most floorboards are saveable after water exposure. Contact SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows for water cleanup at (732) 432-9800.

Education was behind the incorporation of Plainsboro in 1919. Residents of areas in South Brunswick Township and Cranbury Township felt the need to create schools to serve the growing population, a goal attained through incorporation. The founding school, J.V.B. Wicoff School, still stands today and has been joined by other top-performing schools. Located in Middlesex County, Plainsboro is considered part of the greater New York metropolitan area.

Although Plainsboro's original inhabitants were the Unami and Lenape people, it was the Dutch who settled the area in the 17th century. Its agricultural tradition continued well into the 20th century, and the town still honors its rural past. In telling the city's history, one cannot forget the influence Princeton University has had on its development. Most notably, the past nearly 50 years have seen suburban development thanks initially to a partnership between Princeton and Lincoln Properties. Since then, retail space, healthcare developments, and public buildings have continued to grow and offer their services to residents of the area.

The Walker-Gordon Dairy Farm became one of the anchor properties in Plainsboro when it opened in 1897. Over time, the Simonson, Groendyke, and Parker farms also established operations in the township. As these farms consolidated, several joined the Walker-Gordon Dairy Farm, which eventually became a single-family home housing community. The Stults and the Simonson Farms are still operational and providing employment to the area.

Plainsboro Today

Plainsboro has successfully grown from a farming community to the diverse township we see today. Among its attractive features, residents and visitors can enjoy the following-

  • Urban planning seeks to maintain over 50% of the area as open space. The Plainsboro Preserve offers hiking trails, a lake, and the preservation of natural habitats. In addition, the New Jersey Audubon provides educational programs at its environmental education center.
  • In terms of education, the West Windsor Plainsboro Regional School District is recognized among the state's top districts. Its students typically excel as measured by standardized testing and pursue a college education.

  • Moving through Plainsboro is relatively easy. Commuting to New York City and Jersey City is simple through the train system. Newark Liberty International Airport and the Philadelphia International Airport are both within an hour of Plainsboro.

East Brunswick Has Plenty To Do For Kids Of All Ages

East Brunswick is a township in New Jersey, with a population of 46,756. East Brunswick is part of the New York metropolitan area and is situated beside the popular commuter town of New Brunswick. Being so close to NYC means there is always plenty to see and do near East Brunswick, but you do not have to travel into the city to enjoy a wealth of amenities and entertainment. East Brunswick offers plenty to do, right on your doorstep.

East Brunswick has a long history, with the area originally occupied by the Lenape people. Thomas Lawrence, a baker from nearby New York, purchased a significant parcel of land in 1677. More settlers arrived at the end of the seventeenth century, and by the middle of the nineteenth century, a small settlement had built up, and East Brunswick was well on its way to becoming a town.

The area started as a farming community, which was very different from today’s metropolitan town. However, in the 1930s, the site saw more suburban growth thanks to improved road access and a boom in house building. When the New Jersey Turnpike was extended to East Brunswick in 1952, the town saw a huge population boom. By 1960, the population had tripled!

Get Out Into Nature In East Brunswick

Because East Brunswick is so close to New York and is a suburban area, you might think that opportunities to get into nature are limited! However, there are plenty of places to enjoy the fresh air, including:

  • Rutgers Gardens is part of Rutgers University and houses an impressive collection of plants and trees spread over 180 acres. How Can Pet Supplies Be Protected From Water Damage?

9/17/2020 (Permalink)

Pets & supplies No matter when you make the call, SERVPRO has technicians who can assist you.

East Brunswick Homeowners Want To Protect Pet Beds and Food From Water Damage.

Pet owners living in East Brunswick know that our furry and feathered friends are like part of the family. Our pets bring joy and laughter into our lives – and they also take money, care, and commitment. It is natural to want to do the best by them while also being conscious of your budget. Pet care is not cheap!

Unfortunately, pet supplies are susceptible to water damage in East Brunswick, just like any other household items. Water damage can occur due to bad weather or rain seeping through the cracks in a windowpane, or underneath an ill-fitting door. Water damage can also happen because of a plumbing problem, a leaking appliance, or a sloping garden that lets water run towards your property.

Replacing pet supplies can be costly, so it is better to protect them if you can.

Which pet supplies are susceptible to water damage?

Water can quickly soak into:

  • Large pet beds, such as for a dog
  • Soft bedding materials for hamsters and gerbils
  • Pet toys for animals and birds of all kinds
  • Bags of pet food or treats
  • Blankets, favorite cushions, or outdoor coats

More durable materials such as metal cages or wooden scratching posts are also in danger from water damage. Metal can rust if not properly dried, and wooden items can swell and warp.

Is there anything I can do to protect my pet supplies?

SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows knows that preventing damage is essential. We are there for you whenever an incident occurs, but if you can avoid a disaster, that is even better.

Easy ways to protect your pet supplies include:

  • Transferring food into watertight containers and keeping toys in containers when not in use
  • Storing bedding, blankets, and dog beds in a dry area of your home, away from water sources
  • Keeping pet supplies on raised shelves where possible
  • Be mindful of water damage risks – keep your appliances in good order and ensure your garden has adequate drainage
  • Deal with a problem as soon as they arise – do not ignore that leaky window or dripping faucet, but take action as soon as you notice something is amiss

What about medicine and documentation?

When water-proofing your pet supplies, do not forget about any medications your pets are on, and documentation such as vet papers, insurance, or microchip records.

Store medications in a dry place out of the way of potential water hazards. You can invest in a watertight box. Keep papers in a watertight storage box too – and ensure you keep an electronic backup of all vital paperwork.

What should I do if water damage occurs?

Call SERVPRO at the first sign of trouble. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster, and no job is too big or too small. We understand how tempting it is to begin cleanup yourself, but it is better to wait until our team arrives. We equip our people with all the training and tools they need to remediate water damage.

What can SERVPRO do to help?

Whether you are dealing with a leaking dishwasher, a burst pipe, or water seeping under a door, our team will assess the situation and decide an appropriate course of action. We discuss everything with you, so you are always in the loop.

Once the extent of water damage has been assessed, the first step is to mop up or pump out any standing water. For small leaks, a wand extractor and absorbent cloth might do the trick, but we have powerful free-standing and truck-mounted extractors on hand for more massive leaks. We also have rotary extractors in case there is water soaking into your carpet.

Our team will let you know what we can salvage and what must be replaced. We always aim to save items rather than toss them. We have many different cleaning methods at our disposal, including submersion cleaning, dry cleaning, and spot cleaning.

We use dehumidifiers and air movers to dry over, under, and around waterlogged toys and beds. We also dry out carpets, baseboards, and anywhere else that has water damage. We use various tools, including moisture probes, moisture meters, and thermo-hygrometers, to monitor drying progress. SERVPRO technicians know that thorough drying is key to eliminating damp smells and preventing fungal growth, which is why drying is an essential part of our water remediation process.

We may also be able to use vacuum freeze-drying to rescue water-damaged papers.

The last stage is the deodorization. No-one wants their pet supplies smelling damp, so we use air scrubbers and spot cleaning to eliminate leftover smells.

What happens after SERVPRO leaves?

We want you and your pets to be happy. A week after our visit, one of our team managers will get in touch to make sure you are satisfied and answer any questions.

If you need help with water damage, call SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows at (732) 432-9800.

What Services Clean up Excess Water for Residential Properties?

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Equipment and technicians We understand the need for rapid response to minimize the loss of your property after water damage occurs. Call us right away we are available 24/7.

SERVPRO is a Residential Water Removal Specialist for the East Brunswick Area.

Is water removal complex?

Getting large quantities of water out of residential property in East Brunswick requires complex equipment. When large bodies of water enter your home, it is essential to take into account efficiency and time-span for removal. Generally, the longer water resides inside a property, the more damage it can cause. While ventilation and natural processes may eventually dry a property, the damage that can occur during that time from exposure to moisture can be an expensive additional cost. Most insurers require appropriate action from policyholders to ensure that losses are kept to a minimum. Using a professional company with nationally recognized qualifications can ensure that initial water issues are dealt with appropriately before they get out of control. Typical examples of untreated water issues may include mold issues, water migration, or degradation of water.

Are microbes in water dangerous to a home environment?

All water contains microbes. However, most homeowners in East Brunswick use a professional water removal company  to prevent uncontrolled microbial growth. Microbial growth can occur in as little as seventy-two hours, which can lead to the buildup of unpleasant bacteria, fungi, and viruses in your home. We can act quickly to reduce microbial buildup by performing efficient water removal and drying in your home. By pumping out large quantities of water and removing any residual moisture using extractors, we can control microbial growth. Additionally, SERVPRO technicians are trained to set up proper drying controls in the affected area to ensure a reduction in humidity levels and damp spots around the home.

What can water migration affect in a home environment?

- Humidity levels

- Cavities between floorboards or inner walls

- Subfloor and ceilings

Can I Dry Saturated Drywall in My Plainsboro Home?

5/26/2020 (Permalink)

homeowner trying to fix the leak Having issues fixing the drywall from the water damage in your Plainsboro home? Call SERVPRO to do all the work for you.

Our SERVPRO professionals can help with hundreds of drying decisions and work to provide the most efficient path to a full recovery of your property.

Drywall is one of the most common structural materials in Plainsboro homes, meaning that this is a commonly damaged area that our SERVPRO team must address. Because sheetrock is highly porous, it can oversaturate quickly. Within as little as 24 hours, drywall can become irreparably damaged by water exposure.

While extraction and drying are only portions of the complete water restoration for Plainsboro homes, they are two of the most crucial. Removing moisture from structural elements like drywall requires a calculated approach, balancing whether it is worth the money to take the time to dry the material versus removing it.

Is it More Cost-Effective to Remove Wet Drywall?

In many cases, it is determined that because of the present damage to drywall and complete wall systems, it is most cost-effective to remove surface materials and reinstall new materials once the area gets dried. Whether drying sheetrock or not, these tools and techniques can help to manage the situation:

water on hardwood floor Having issues with drying your hardwood floor in your home? Call SERVPRO in your Plainsboro area.

Our SERVPRO professionals have extraction and drying solutions for hardwood floors to prevent demolition and replacement.

Hardwood flooring is a common material in Plainsboro homes, but one that can be highly sensitive to standing water and absorption. Knowing how to dry out these materials is vital to protecting your investment in the house after a loss.

Water removal for Plainsboro homes and their hardwood floors often falls to multiple different tools and strategies. As you might expect, removing surface water is always the first step in recovering the entire flooring system, as standing water pooling on top of the wood can continue to get absorbed into the planks.

How Can My Flooring Get Professionally Dried?

To avoid irreparable destruction of your wood flooring, such as warping and distortion of the individual planks, several tools can get used to begin methodically drying the flooring. Much like concrete, rapid changes in moisture content can be harmful to the material, so a controlled drying process occurs with tools like:

Waterbed Water Damage Restoration in East Brunswick

Waterbeds may be well past their sales prime in the late 1980s when they comprised 20% of all new mattress sales, but even now, almost 35 years later, there is still a dedicated following for this type of bedding. One significant caveat of waterbed ownership, however, is the risk of either slow or rapid water damage that can come from leaks, tears, and perforations in the mattress casing.

If your East Brunswick bedroom requires water damage cleanup from a waterbed mishap, the mitigation professionals at SERVPRO are available to start cleanup within hours of your initial contact. The goal of each step of the process is to remove water, return structures and contents to their preloss condition, and perform any additional tasks needed to restore your home. Your local SERVPRO is also licensed to offer general contracting services (#13VH06622700) to rebuild your home after a disaster occurs.

3 Ways to Find Waterbed Leaks

  • Fill the bed with air. Once the mattress is sufficiently full of air, rub it down with sudsy water. Soap bubbles can indicate locations of air leaving through tears in the mattress casing.
  • Palpate for perforations. Leave the mattress partially filled for this method. Dry off the surface and press down on the surface as if you were performing CPR. Water should leave from openings in the bedding.
  • Locating leaks. Press down on the corners of the mattress until your hands contact the floor of the bed. Repeat this procedure along the seams. Small beads of water that suddenly appear can indicate a leak—mark these areas with a permanent marker.

SERVPRO Restores Your Home

If you have a waterbed that suddenly bursts on the second story of your home, it is likely that structures underneath your bedroom on the first floor also require cleaning and drying. SERVPRO professionals can remediate water damage in both areas with portable extraction tools, rovers on carpeting, and large rubber suction pads for hardwood floors. Light demolition of ceilings may be necessary if you notice crumbling drywall or sagging, but this provides ventilation while drying the second-floor subflooring.

SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows provides the community with a licensed mitigation service that is Faster to Any Size Disaster. Call (732) 432-9800 for rapid disaster cleanup.

Signs of Water Damage

No one ever truly understands the power of rain, of water, until water is truly gone. And once water has found its way inside your house, it can travel anywhere, creating hidden problems. Even after that big puddle of water recedes, there may be some fatal problems lurking behind the scenes. Here with some helpful tips on how to identify water damage, SERVPRO of East Brunswick/Princeton Meadows urges you to pay attention.

  • Smell the air! Hidden water stagnates and forms bacterial growth. This formation causes certain unpleasant odors in the air-- a musky, earthy smell--that is a sure indicator of hidden water.
  • Spot the stains! Any water that manifests in the ceiling or walls tend to discolor the area. Any abnormal color in a specified area ay be a clear indicator of potential water damage.
  • Peeling Paint. When drywall saturates water, the adhesion between paint and the wall may be lost. If you see the paint falling away, it might be water sneaking through the house.
  • Sagging spaces and finicky floors. If you notice walls and ceilings starting to sage or the floor starting to feel different, it may be necessary that you open up the areas to dry the spaces out.

Now, it is easy to see all of these signs as daunting--sending you straight into a panic. However you don’t have to be an expert to help yourself. When you feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, remember SERVPRO of East Brunswick is here 24/7 to help you breathe a little easier.

Preventing Summer Flooding and Water Damage

7/11/2018 (Permalink)

In the past week, if not couple of weeks, the suffocating heat has hit the east coast with a vengeance. Rest assured, the sweat and discomfort is about to go away even if it’s just for a while. With severe heat, always comes a tumultuous storm to break the weather. SERVPRO of East Brunswick / Princeton Meadows is here to remind you that even though the storms might seem like a relief, everyone should always stay prepared.

While awaiting the much calmer weather, there are some things that you should do to make sure that the storm does not add unnecessary stress. One potential major issue: flooding and water damage. Fortunately, there are some easy preventative steps you can take to make sure water damage is not a major concern.

  • Update and maintain your drainage in the yard. This can be as simple as adding extra landscaping or purchasing plastic drainage to lead the water away from the home. The further the water is, the less likely it is going to be a problem.
  • Check your sump pump. The sump pump is a life-savor, constantly working to drain water as the levels exceed the foundation and expel the water away from the house. Make sure your sump pump is in good condition and check on it during a rain storm to ensure it has not stopped working.

Nevertheless, these are just prevention methods and sometimes things go beyond our control. In those moments where everything seems to be going wrong, just remember to BREATHE and call SERVPRO of East Brunswick/Princeton Meadows (732) 432-9800 so we can take the worry out of your hands.

What You Need to Know About Water Damage Cleanup

3/22/2017 (Permalink)

Water damage to warehouse caused by broken sprinkler. SERVPRO of East Brunswick was on site immediately resulting in business as usual the next day.

What You Need to Know About Water Damage

Water damage can be devastating and overwhelming whatever the cause.   When it comes to water damage in your home or business, understanding the type of water you’re dealing with is crucial in assessing the procedures required for proper clean up.  Taking the necessary precautions and steps is crucial in avoiding further damage until the professionals arrive.  Knowing what you are dealing with will help you avoid future health and structural issues.

Clean Water –Category 1

Clean water, also known as Category 1, come from such sources as water supply lines including tub, sink or toilet tank overflows, hot water heater and refrigerator ice or water supply line.  This is usually the easiest type of water to deal with.  Properly cleaning and drying the affected areas are your biggest concerns to avoid mold

Gray Water – Category 2

Clean water, left over time, can become gray water.  Gray water is water that is to some extent contaminated either because it was left untreated or due to the nature of the source.  An overflowing toilet or dishwasher would be considered gray water.  Water that has travelled through walls and ceilings, even though from a clean source, would be gray water in this case.

Black Water – Category 3

Black water is the most contaminated type of water of the three.   It can be filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals, pesticides and more.  Black water is caused by sewage damage, flooding or natural disasters. Examples are sewage backup, ground water intrusion or sump pump backup.  Black water requires special equipment and proper handling and safety precautions when restoring your home or business from this type of water damage.

Whatever the cause or type of water damage you experience, the most important thing is to minimize the damage and call our IICRC certified professionals for help.  Don’t leave your home or business to chance, call SERVPRO of East Brunswick/Princeton Meadows at 732-432-9800 and let our professionals help.

Preventing Frozen Pipes and Water Damage

2/10/2016 (Permalink)

We are expecting the coldest air of the season to move in this week.  Frigid air, bitter cold artic blast is expected through Sunday.  Here's what you need to know to be prepared and prevent water damage to your home:

  • Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through unheated or uninsulated areas of your home.
  • Shut off outdoor faucets. Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to “off .”
  • If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.
  • Proper maintainance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of puffbacks.
  • Tag the location of your main water valve and make sure you can easily turn it on and off.
  • If you have a thermostat that is battery operated, be sure to replace it regularly.
  • If you have a thermostat that uses a battery, be sure to replace it regularly.
  • Wrap pipes nearest exterior walls and in crawl spaces with pipe insulation or heating tape.

Following these precautionary steps to protect your plumbing will help you avoid water damage cleanup to your home after a burst pipe.

Have You Checked Your Washer and Dryer Lately?

12/6/2013 (Permalink)

Periodic washer and dryer maintenance could avoid major flooding issues in your home.

Don't Ignore Your Washer and Dryer

Did you know that your washer and dryer is a likely source for flood or fire in your home?  Without periodic maintenance, you could be dealing with a major flood or fire problem.  Preventing a flood due to a washer’s hose corroding and splitting open is as easy as inspecting periodically and replacing when necessary.  Check and clean filters to avoid buildup and water flow problems.

As illustrated in this picture, SERVPRO of East Brunswick recently cleaned up water damage in Princeton, New Jersey caused by a corroded washer hose that cracked open.   The damage to the property was extensive affecting hardwood floors as well as carpet, contents and drywall. With more attention to maintenance, you can avoid this from happening to you.
